President Donald Trump unveiled his Middle East peace plan, which includes support for a two-state solution that gives Palestine a path to statehood. President Trump spoke about the plan during an event with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the East Room of the White House.
"My vision provides a win-win opportunity for both sides. A realistic two-state solution that resolves the risk of Palestinian statehood to Israel's security," the president said. "Crucially, the proposed transition to a two-state solution will prevent no incremental security risk to the state of Israel."
The 80-page document details the specific territories that would be divided up between Israel and Palestine. Trump said that under the plan, Palestinians would receive "more than double" the territory they currently have. The Palestinian capital would be located in eastern Jerusalem, but Trump said that Jerusalem will still be Israel's "undivided capital."
The plan requires approval from the Palestinians, and President Trump called on Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas to join the discussions about the plan.
"President Abbas, I want you to know that if you choose the path to peace, America and many other countries, we will be there, we will be there to help you in so many different ways, and we will be there every step of the way, we will be there to help," Trump said.
